Upgrading your membership

If you’re an existing CIPD member and can provide sufficient evidence that you’ve been operating at the required level for the last three years, then you could be eligible for an upgrade to either Chartered Member (Chartered MCIPD) or Chartered Fellow (Chartered FCIPD). Your membership upgrade will:
  • open doors to new opportunities
  • boost your professional standing
  • demonstrate your commitment to achieving and maintaining high standards
  • show that adhere to an ethical Code of Professional Conduct
  • give you opportunities to shape the future of the profession
  • allow you to use of the letters Chartered MCIPD or Chartered FCIPD after your name.
Here’s some guidance to help you decide which level of chartered membership to apply for. Chartered Member (Chartered MCIPD)
To be eligible for an upgrade to Chartered Member you must currently be an Associate member who has completed a CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma or has previously held Graduate membership. In addition you’ll also need to show that you are operating at the right level, to help you decide, here’s some guidance:
  • Do you have consistent evidence of managing, developing and implementing HR or L&D projects and programmes?
  • Can you evidence the impact of your HR or L&D work on the business, using metrics, business outputs and feedback?
  • Do you work to timescales of around 12-18 months (for example planning HR business activity over a financial year or managing long projects)?
  • Do you have sustained evidence of aligning HR or L&D work to meet business needs?
  • Can you demonstrate your commercial understanding of your organisation(s) with evidence of developing or working on HR business cases?
 
Chartered Fellow (Chartered FCIPD)
To be eligible for an upgrade to Chartered Fellow you must currently be a Chartered Member (Chartered MCIPD) or an Associate member who has completed a CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma. Previous Graduate members of the CIPD can also apply. In addition you’ll also need to show that you are operating at the right level, to help you decide, here’s some guidance:
  • Do you have evidence of developing, delivering and implementing wide-reaching and long-term HR or L&D strategy?
  • Can you evidence the impact of this strategy through evaluation of business outputs such as business metrics, financial or people measures?
  • Can you demonstrate how you have integrated HR or L&D strategy with the business vision, strategy and objectives?
  • Do you work to timescales of three years or longer (e.g. developing, delivering and evaluating an HR strategy over a period of time)?
  • Are you commercially savvy with evidence of developing compelling HR or L&D business cases at a senior level?
 
If you’re a Student member your membership will automatically be upgraded to Associate member as soon as you successfully completed your CIPD-approved qualification. Once you’ve achieved Associate membership you can apply to upgrade to Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow, providing you hold a CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma and have the relevant experience.

You can upgrade by either submitting an application form or arranging a telephone assessment.
 
To apply by form please follow these simple steps:
  • Return all forms with a copy of your current CV to memupgrading@cipd.co.uk, after which your application will be reviewed by one of our experienced HR assessors.

  • Our Customer Services team will contact you for payment.
    (Please note that if you've recently become a Graduate, your first upgrade application by form to Chartered Member is free if done within a year of receiving your Graduate certificate.)

  • You'll receive the results in less than six weeks and, if successful, we'll send you your new Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow card and certificate.
 
If upgrading to Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow by telephone assessment, you will be invited to talk about your experience with one of our experienced HR assessors. Please see our candidate guidance notes for telephone assessment.
 
In advance of the assessment, you’ll be required to provide feedback from your line manager or client along with a copy of your current CV. Shortly after your assessment you'll receive an email confirming the outcome. If successful, we'll send you your new Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow card and certificate.

The assessment process takes approximately takes 6–8 weeks to complete.
The cost of upgrading varies depending on the level of membership you're applying for and the assessment method that you choose. The fee is payable when you submit your application and is non-refundable.
