UAE looks towards a progressive future with new cabinet, with increasing role for female ministers

The UAE looked towards an increasingly diverse and progressive future after swearing in eight new ministers to a reshuffled cabinet on Saturday.
The cabinet includes three new positions: the minister for tolerance, the minister for happiness, and the minister for youth, who will lead the UAE National Youth Council set up by prime minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum.
“The newly created UAE National Youth Council will include an elite group of young men and women to advise on youth affairs,” said the prime minister. “The council will be led by a 22 year-old female minister of state, and the energy of youth will fuel our government in the future.”
Oxford University graduate Shamma Al Mazrui was sworn into the role, with colleagues Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi appointed minister for tolerance and Ohood bint Khalfan Al Roumi being named the minister for happiness.
The cabinet positions for tolerance and happiness are intended to gear government policy towards creating social good and satisfaction, and promote tolerance as a fundamental value of UAE society. Upholding these values, the Sheikh said, is a fundamental step towards forming a government of the future.
The reshuffle has also demonstrated a commitment to gender diversity, with five of the eight new ministerial roles filled by women. Almost a third of cabinet roles are now held by women, indicating they have a critical role to play in decision-making and the region’s future development.
With eight cabinet members in their 20s and early 30s, the reshuffle has been hailed as the beginning of a new progressive era for the UAE; the appointments have met with overwhelmingly positive reactions from UAE citizens.
“The new cabinet comes at an important stage of the UAE, which moves steadily with an unlimited ambition towards a better future, taking advantage of its solid development base of human resources and the nation, founded by the late Sheikh Zayed,” said Sheikh Mohammed said.
“When we say it is a cabinet of the future, it means that these young, new ministers will be the ones to take the UAE into the next stage of its development.”
